Dirty Kitchen: studio journal #2

Frank Solivan & Dirty KitchenHere’s another update from our friends Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen. The guys are currently in Nashville and working hard a new recording. They’ve graciously decided to give us all a window into the process. They’re sending along updates every few days, including video footage from the studio.

I spoke with Frank on the phone yesterday and he told me that the band had all suffered from a cold bug, which they call the band crud, and so they had only tracked instruments to this point, but they were fully recovered and gearing up for some vocal sessions this week.

We had a photo shoot today for about 6.5 hours. Hopped in the van and drove to some prime spots in and around Nashville. Our guide and photographer: Michael Witcher (http://mikewitcher.com). He plays a mean dobro with Missy Raines and takes some mean photos too. Some credits of his include Punch Brothers, Lonesome River Band, and many, many more. What a great eye for composition and texture.

Frank with the owner of Watanabe sushi bar - Hide WatanabeBy the end of the day… We ended up at Watanabe Sushi Bar for some great food and some indoor shots. Below is a shot of the owner (http://www.watanabesushibar.com/ ) – Hide Watanabe and me. A great friend and banjo picker. Thanks for letting us use your restaurant for some wonderful photos ideas.

Here’s the second installment of their video log of the recording process.

Be sure to visit DirtyKitchenBand.com and check out the two streaming tracks right there on the home page. These tracks were recorded a couple months ago to meet the IBMA application deadline, but Frank tells me they will be included on the new CD.
