Peter Rowan signs with Compass

Compass Records takes another step towards the bluegrass market with their signing of Peter Rowan yesterday (4/19). Over the past two years, they have released albums from Dale Ann Bradley, The Gibson Brothers, Bearfoot, and the John Hartford String Band, with a new project from Special Consensus due in late May.

The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band is scheduled to begin recording a new Compass project this month, with label head Alison Brown producing. The band features Rowan on guitar and lead vocal, with Keith Little on banjo, Jody Stecher on mandolin, and Paul Knight on bass.

Rowan plans a mix of original and traditional material on this CD, which as the band name suggests, is geared towards the bluegrass music he has

For her part, Brown is psyched to have this new album on her label.

“I can’t think of another person in bluegrass with such a varied history: Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, Seatrain, Old & In the Way, not to mention the breadth of the solo material he’s written and recorded. We’re excited to have Peter as part of the Compass family, and with this new record I’m really excited to be working with Peter to shine a light on his bluegrass roots.”

We’ll post more as details emerge.
